Leukippos

(Strauss : Daphne). Ten. A shepherd, he and Daphne have grown up together, and treat each other as brother and sister. Leukippos tries to tell Daphne that he loves her. She resists his efforts to embrace her, feeling towards him only as a sister. Her maids suggest to him that he should dress as a woman and try to win her affection first as a friend and this he does, dancing with her at the Dionysian feast her father has organized to greet the sun-god Apollo. Apollo also falls in love with Daphne, and reveals to her Leukippos' true identity. The men fight and Leukippos is killed. Only then does Daphne understand that she did truly love him. Duet (with Daphne): Leukippos, du? Ja, ich selbst (‘Leukippos, is it you? Yes, it is I’). Of the two tenor roles of Helden proportions in this opera, Leukippos requires the more lyrical voice, and among those who have been notable in the part are Anton Dermota and Fritz Wunderlich .
